FESTA POPOLARE
6.00
Festa Popolare is a group of Italian Canadian musicians performing the modern and ancient dance music of southern Italy. Love, magic, death, devotion, and no shortage of bawdy humour pervade these songs, played with authentic instruments and sung in the ancient, endangered languages of the region. From the longing of lovers to the terrors of war, from dances of courtship and revelry to exorcism ceremonies for those afflicted by the wolf spider, these are the rhythms and melodies that sustained the poor masses of southern Italy for countless generations. Travelling far beyond the well-known folk repertoire, Festa Popolare takes audiences to the depths of these traditions, some seldom performed outside of Italy.
NUNO CRISTO FADO AT DROM
8.30
Fado@Drom is an original project dedicated to fado performances at the Drom taberna. Musicians Nuno Cristo (Portuguese guitar) and Pedro Joel (classical guitar) team up with singer Jennifer Bettencourt to present fado songs and music to a diverse audience downtown Toronto. From the old neighborhoods of Lisbon, Fado@Drom brings you the bitter-sweet taste of fado and the sound environment of a culture that goes back to nineteenth century Portugal.
