Conceptualized in March 2022 by trumpeter and vocalist, Shannon McDougall, and saxophonist and composer, Dennis Kwok, the McDougall/Kwok Sextet is the result of their shared influences of music from the swing era, highly arranged hard bop, and intricate vocal harmonies. They bring together their collective experience playing in multiple big bands from the Toronto All-Star Big Band, Socialist Night School, SONUSKAPOS Jazz Orchestra, and beyond, to weave together a tightly arranged horn section with the daringness of a small group. Using a classic format akin to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, they present an evening of standards from the Great American Songbook, hard swinging modern jazz originals, and vocal trio arrangements. The McDougall/Kwok Sextet swings, sings, and there's always something fresh for the ears.
