SASHA MIKITENKO
6.00

Aleksandr Mikitenko is an indie-underground singer-songwriter, musician and translator from Odessa, Ukraine, who became a refugee along with his family because of the Russian-Ukrainian war and eventually settled in Toronto, Canada. He was a member of a huge Russian-speaking underground punk-rock community and best known as a leader of Istok, a band, that for decades has been playing music influenced by forceful alternative rock, impassioned punk and lyrically searching, singer-songwriter folk. He is also a co-founder of a lo-fi/post-punk duo Libertango along with his wife Marina Polianskaia, who were true followers of the All Wave Philosophy.

AMARRAS TANGO
8.00

Amarras is a quintet playing contemporary argentine tango. Formed in 2018, Amarras strives for a musical aesthetic that is dark, intense, and transformative. The music of contemporary tango is a music of resistance, and should resonate as closely with those listening in bars as those listening in chamber halls, or perhaps more so. It strives to move people, to be uncomfortable, to be bold. It is not pleasant music, though it is beautiful. It is not easy music, though it is accessible. It avoids cliché and trope, while still deriving power from a genre that is laced with both. It is explorative, challenging, and intrepid. It is unexpected. It is urban. It is loud. It is visceral. It hopes to re-awaken motivic polyphonic chamber music as a popular music, suitable for street corners, engendering shouts instead of polite applause, and addressing themes relevant to this moment, including but not limited to communities organizing to resist cultural hegemony.
