HEAVY METAL KLEZMER
WITH MYK FREEDMAN
8.00
Myk Freedman’s Heavy Metal Klezmer reimagines traditional Jewish music through the elemental force of fire—through spellcasting with instruments. Our ancestral history teaches us that true safety means safety for all. Our music proclaims Doikayt, a Yiddish term meaning hereness. When we are here playing music, all who hear us are our kin. In this hereness, we transcend the borders meant to divide us. We burn through the notes of our ancestral past to forge the present we desperately need: one that belongs to everyone.
15$ cover after 10pm, with all proceeds going directly to the musicians performing.

EL BALCON
2.30
El Balcón is a collective that composes and arranges as one. They came together in the culturally rich atmosphere of Montreal with a common love for traditional music from around the world and a desire to explore new possibilities in acoustic sound and groove.
As each of the 6 individuals learned and grew as musicians, so did the band evolve from being one that arranges traditional tunes, to being one that composes innovative original music, whilst never losing the acoustic spirit of the traditional music that inspires them. Mexican folk instruments like the Jarana, Requinto and “La Tarima” (Polyrhythm foot board for traditional rhythmic dancing) blend with microtonal melodies of the east on the violin and oud. All grounded with the earthy touch of an upright bass and an array of masterful percussion including cajon, riqq, pandero, and Kijada del Burro (donkey jaw bone). Their heavily danceable yet unusual rhythms set the stage for the two voices of the lead singers that never sing a song twice the same.
To see El Balcón live is to see a band of best friends who have all lived together at different points. This familial connection comes through on stage where their love of creating and playing together shows in their fiery performances.
