Festa Popolare is a group of Italian Canadian musicians performing the modern and ancient dance music of southern Italy. A land situated in the centre of the Mediterranean, southern Italy has long been a cultural crucible: Native traditions fusing and clashing with ancient Greek and Latin colonisations formed the bedrock, augmented by a subsequent millennium and a half of foreign invasions, occupations, and migrations, all of which comes through in the living testament of otherwise lost humanities that is the folk music of the South.
Love, magic, death, devotion, and no shortage of bawdy humour pervade these songs, played with authentic instruments and sung in the ancient, endangered languages of the region. From the longing of lovers to the terrors of war, from dances of courtship and revelry to exorcism ceremonies for those afflicted by the wolf spider, these are the rhythms and melodies that sustained the poor masses of southern Italy for countless generations. Travelling far beyond the well-known folk repertoire, Festa Popolare takes audiences to the depths of these traditions, some seldom performed outside of Italy.
