KURT NEWMAN AND THE NEW THEM OF GRASS
8.30

Kurt Newman and the New Them of Grass is a classic bluegrass quartet led by Kurt Newman, a guitarist, teacher, and composer who lives in Toronto. Kurt’s musical interests have overlapped with bluegrass and traditional country since his guitar teacher gave him a Tony Rice tape at age 12. In his younger years, Kurt played lead guitar and lap steel in the pioneering Montreal alt-country band Sackville, before embarking on a career as an experimental and avant jazz musician, moving to Texas and then California, and performing with a host of international luminaries. Since returning to Toronto at the end of the last decade, Kurt has lent his lead guitar services to Eucalyptus, Dun Dun Band, and the Ayal Senior ensemble, opened for The Ex and Mdou Moctar, featured on a number of acclaimed LPs, and released music under the Nashville Minimalism Unit and Country Phasers monikers on Eric Chenaux’s Rat-drifting label. New Them of Grass features Kurt on guitar and vocals, alongside the fiery virtuoso Karsten Stryker on second guitar, Alex Wagstaff on mandolin, and Andrew Furlong on bass. Their repertoire favors music from the “brothers duet” bluegrass tradition (Monroe Brothers, Stanley Brothers, the Louvin Brothers, and Jim and Jesse) and instrumental fiddle tunes in the Golden Era of Bluegrass style.
