11pm Jumple

For sheer exuberance, showmanship, and just plain fun, this band of crazed musical gypsies are simply impossible to beat. With all members of the band hailing from different parts of the former USSR, there is a distinct cultural and musical influence that clearly sets this band apart. It's very rare to see a live band that can coax a crowd into dancing the way JUMPLE can - they get people out of their seats and on their feet.

Dr. Moyo's "Call and Response"/Lauren Barnett & Polky Village Band Video Release

6pm Dr. Moyo’s Call and Response

The foundation and pulse of African music is call and response; a sonic dialogue, where one or multiple sounds ask a question, make a statement, pronounce a philosophical meditation and the others offer an answer, affirm and validate. Dr. Moyo’s call and response seek to bring this practice to life in real time by means of having genuine conversations with his audience.

Dr. Moyo will have one or more artists with whom he does artistic call and response. Between songs, stories, poetry, he will invite the audience to ask burning questions from their own lives and experiences to which he will offer sincere and thoughtful responses. The more personal and political the questions are, the better. If you are not a talker, we will have pens and paper for you to write your burning questions.

Moyo

Moyo is a Gwenyambira- master player of the mbira instrument from Zimbabwe, social worker and Ubuntu philosopher-practitioner. Drawing from a large repertoire of ritual songs from ancient mbira music traditions, Moyo weaves together diverse sounds, where in one instance he harnesses the powerful sound of mbira connecting audiences with their meditative and spiritual cores and another he scratches the mbira luring audiences into serendipitous movement. Moyo accompanies the mbira with chants, yodles, poetry, and stories creating a true ceremonial space that is relaxing, joyful and healing.
