7pm Blackout Anniversary Party (Offsite)

"Where were you when the lights went out?"...

On August 14th, 2003, at 4:10pm Ontario along with 8 U.S. states experienced one of the most widespread blackouts in history.

What was considered a technical disaster is now fondly remembered by many Torontonians as a night affirming that the community spirit that connects us all is still alive and well.

From tales such as the Rodney's Oyster House boys shucking oysters on a broken down King West streetcar, to an insane block party in Little Portugal, or even just the sight of the skyline against the beautiful backdrop of the Milkyway still bring a smile.

The power of community and goodwill generated that night inspired a ragtag group to celebrate it's anniversary in a fashion true to the spirit of the blackout. A spirit of fun, generosity and spontaneity.

So come celebrate the blackout's sweet 16!

Here's the plan;

7-8:45 PM >>> Meet your friends at Nathan Phillips Square, and catch some music...

Join the BIKE RIDE starting at 8 PM >>> Into the SWEET DUSK with your WHEELS,

OR...

PARADE at 8:45 PM >>> as we take you on an adventure on our way to the...

AFTER PARTY IN A SECRET LOCATION!

Over the course of the night expect to see your favourite bands such as Viper’s Cloud, Big Smoke Brass Band, Toronto Klezmer Society, SHOUT!, Flamenco, Polky Village Band and Red Tent

Come as you are! Bring supplies, costumes, comfortable shoes, lights, dance moves, and loved ones!

The Bob Stevenson Quartet (Bob Stevenson, clarinet and bass clarinet; Jonnie Bakan, alto saxophone; Mike Milligan, contrabass and Jeff Halischuk, drums) performs music composed specifically for the group by Bob. The creative attitude of the ensemble is best described as what was referred to in 1960s jazz parlance as “new thing”. The music combines carefully composed material that does not necessarily use the standard song form, along with various approaches to extemporization that include free playing, creating over given chordal, melodic and rhythmic structures, as well as references to older and more traditional forms.
